Choco-cherry coconut smoothie (sugar free + vegan)

Smoothies have a reputation for being a healthy breakfast, but like many health claims, the devil is in the detail. All fresh fruit smoothies may taste delicious, but they can also spike your blood sugar in the morning if that is all that is in them.

The trick to smoothies is to always have a protein and healthy fat included in your recipe. Adding those extra-base ingredients will give you a more sustained energy and satiate you for longer.

This smoothie is naturally sweetened from the cherries and coconut milk with no added sugar. If you’re used to extra sweet smoothies this will taste different, and feel free to add a couple of dates or honey if you need to transition for your taste-buds.

  • 1/4 cup full fat coconut milk

  • 3/4 cup cold water

  • 1/2 cup frozen pitted cherries

  • 1 tbsp chia seeds

  • 2 tbsp flax seeds

  • 1 tbsp almond butter

  • 1 tbsp raw cacao

  • shake of cinnamon

Directions

Put all the ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth consistency. Drink immediately.

If you want to make this ahead of time put all the ingredients except the flax and chia in a container to easily put into a blender in the morning. You can measure out the flax and chia and put it in a separate container.

Enjoy!
